New Risk Assessment Template for Cleaning

The new Handsam resource

Handsam has generated a new resource for 2022 - RAS73 Risk Assessment Template: Cleaning. This aims to help clients manage and assess risks associated with on-site cleaning processes.

Although some risks cannot be prevented, schools and academies should always look to eliminate hazards where possible, especially now with the added risk of coronavirus.

What is included in the risk assessment?

The template includes guidance on assessing risks regarding:

  • Slips and trips;
  • Working from height;
  • Manual handling;
  • Hazardous substances e.g. cleaning products;
  • Dealing with bodily fluids;
  • Use of foggers;
  • Hard-arm vibration;
  • Electrical safety;
  • Lone working; and
  • Security.

It is worth noting that certain risks cannot be prevented completely. In these cases, schools and academies should be focused instead on what is 'reasonably practicable' by aiming to protect anyone likely to come into contact with the risk. However, no risk is averted by the amount of writing in a risk assessment so it is best to be brief and to the point.
