New DfE Guidance Protective Security and Preparedness for Education Settings
The Department for Education (DfE) has issued non-statutory guidelines for all educational institutions to navigate significant incidents effectively.
Security and Readiness
The recently released guidance, centred on protective security and readiness, emphasizes the importance of strategic planning and delineating staff responsibilities.
In response to such incidents, educational settings are advised to consider three pre-planned responses: lockdown, invacuation, and evacuation (full, partial, phased, or directional).
The Role of Teachers
Teachers play a pivotal role in promoting learner safety and well-being, potentially assuming additional responsibilities during incidents. One such role is that of a security lead, tasked with coordinating security measures, formulating response strategies, ensuring staff training, liaising with external agencies, and assuming incident leadership when necessary
Active Incidents
During active incidents, the security lead typically transitions to the role of incident lead, supported by deputies. Their responsibilities encompass orchestrating the initial response, consulting with law enforcement, making swift decisions, accounting for individuals, managing resources, prioritizing well-being, and maintaining open communication with parents and carers.
While teachers may not always hold lead roles, they are integral to implementing and upholding security plans. Remaining vigilant, reporting concerns, participating in relevant training, and adhering to school policies are essential aspects of their duty. In ongoing incidents, contacting emergency services is paramount unless already done by another party.
Pupil Involvement
Pupil involvement in security drills varies across educational levels, with primary settings less likely to conduct such drills. Nonetheless, drills provide opportunities to familiarize oneself with procedures and consider the needs of learners, including those with special educational requirements.
Summary
Overall, the guidance underscores the importance of preparedness, collaboration, and vigilance in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals within educational environments.
