LGBT+ History Month: February 2023
How can you get involved?
February is LGBT+ History Month - the annual month-long observance and celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, including the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements.
Founded in 1994, the month celebrates LGBT+ role models, builds community and represents civil rights.
LGBT+ History Month 2023: Behind the Lens
The LGBT+ History Month 2023 #BehindTheLens celebrates LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to cinema and film from behind the lens. Directors, cinematographers, screenwriters, producers, animators, costume designers, special effects, make-up artists, lighting directors, musicians, choreographers and beyond. At a time when LGBT+ lives are in the media, it's a great opportunity for you to look ‘Behind the Lens’ and listen to LGBT+ peoples’ lived experiences.
Aims
The aim of LGBT+ History Month is to promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public. We can do this through:
- Increasing the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people, their history and experiences in school curriculums and the wider community
- Raising awareness and advancing the culture of education on matters affecting the LGBT+ community
- Working to make schools and educational establishments safe spaces for LGBT+ communities
- Promoting the welfare of LGBT+ people by ensuring the education system enables them to achieve their full potential and lead fulfilled lives
Why is Teaching LGBT History in Schools Important?
- It makes LGBT+ students feel more included in the class environment;
- It raises awareness of the progress that LGBT+ campaigners have made over the last century;
- It decreases the likelihood of bullying and discrimination;
- It gives often marginalised groups a chance to be heard; and
- It is a chance to learn about human acceptance and kindness
Whilst this is a difficult and sensitive topic, Handsam’s resources, advice and guidance will assist schools with meeting curriculum requirements considerately and sensitively. Due to stigmatisation and prejudice, many LGBT+ students experience bullying – this is why we need to continue to raise awareness about LGBT+ history.
